This was probably my biggest struggle. I told everyone I hated running and that I was going to quit, but I never did. I also felt like I couldn't push myself or "lock in" for races and workouts the way other people could. Sometimes I would fully give up. If this is at all relatable, keep reading to hear stories and strategies to help strengthen your mental game (and your enjoyment).
Comparison
Don't compare yourself to guys. That's it. They're just not the same.
(Also try not to compare yourself to other girls, everyone is different! Just because someone is currently fast, doesn't mean they're doing the right things.)
Identity and sport
My final blurb--- You are more than your performance on the track.Β
It's healthy to separate yourself from your sport and not tie your happiness and identity to your success in running. I know it's hard when you spend so much time training, but work to find happiness outside of running and invest in your life beyond it. This page is inherently running focused, but there's more to life! I'm here to tell you that a missed workout doesn't matter and a bad race is a joke. Sure my running career could've been a little faster if I made more sacrifices, but it would not have been happier -- and that was not a trade I was willing to make.
